The death toll in a strong earthquake that hit Nepal now tops 4,400. Rescue operations are in a race against time as a 72-hour window to find survivors comes to a close. Survival rates decline markedly after that period.

An aid team from Japan is on the way to Kathmandu. The members were scheduled to arrive on Monday, but were unable to land due to crowded air traffic and had to return to Thailand.
Team leader Shigenobu Kobayashi told NHK at Bangkok's international airport that the group has high expectations for its contributions. He said he wants to begin full-scale rescue operations as soon as possible.

今回大地震が起きた地域は、数十年に一度の周期で、大きな地震が起きる確立が極めて高いと言われていた場所のようです。その割には、たいした（或いは全く）準備がされていなかったようですが、これは他の地域にも当てはまることかもしれません。

それはさておき、日本の救援隊の出遅れは残念です。CNNやPBSによると、オーストラリアや中国などからは既に救援隊が到着しているとのこと、諸事情あるのかもしれませんが、こんな時には真っ先に駆けつけて国際貢献して欲しいと思いますね。
